Tea tree oil has a long history of medicinal use. Several researches have found out that this special herb has been used by aboriginals for thousands of years and several stories about a magical lagoon where the tea tree leaves have fallen and gathered were told.

Well, scientifically known as melaleuca alternifolia, the tea tree oil is said to have originated from Australia where it is named as a native Australian herb that possesses remarkable healing properties. It also grows in the Northern New South Wales, and the oil which is used for some medicinal purposes is actually derived from the cells of the tea tree leaves. The oil, for long years, has been used for surgery, skin care, and dental care.

Speaking of dental care, the tea tree oil is deemed potent for treating bad breath. It's no wonder then that today, thousands of toothpastes and oral products are formulated with the tea tree oil on it. The oil is even applied in some mouthwashes and mixed in some solutions to eliminate bad breath.

Tea tree oil for bad breath is offered for some good reasons. In the first place, the tea tree oil for bad breath is antifungal and antiseptic that it can kill bacteria and fungi that thrive in the mouth through food particles that are left unwashed. It is its antiseptic property actually that makes tea tree oil for bad breathe a powerful disinfectant.

Aside from that, tea tree oil for bad breath is proven to have antibiotic properties that can help heal infections in the gums. They are said to be useful for treating severe chronic gingivitis and bleeding of the gums as they deeply penetrate to the skin, allowing the skin to heal and restore its original condition. This is perhaps one of the best reasons that most dental experts today recommend their patients to use toothpaste that contain tea tree oil for bad breath.

Numerous studies have also revealed that tea tree oil for bad breath is highly safe. As support for this is the fact that the oil is a 100% natural product. It is extracted entirely from a renewable natural resource, making it an environmentally friendly product. It is also worth noting that the tea tree oil for bad breath is derived from tea trees that are meticulously managed to make sure that the natural environment where they survive is intact and undisturbed.

However, there are certain cases of unfavorable effects of tea tree oil for bad breath. Some have noted that tea tree oil for bad breath may not totally eliminate plague. Some forms of allergies may even occur, but their incidence is tremendously low when compared to the synthetic products out there in the market.

With all the possible side effects of tea tree oil for bad breath, experts do recommend dental check up to accurately determine whether the oil you are using for your bad breath is the right option for you to consider or not. So before you use a tea tree oil for bad breath, see your dentist first.

Bad breath can be caused by many things. Sometimes bad breath can be caused by medical conditions, but many times to cure bad breath you just have to step up your oral hygiene routine. If you don't have a medical condition that is causing your bad breath, flossing and frequent brushing can help.

Why Do You Get Bad Breath?

The common cause of most bad breath is the waste product that is called volatile sulfur compounds. This is created by anaerobic bacteria in your mouth that is from the food that gets stuck between your teeth after eating. That is why it is so important to brush your teeth after every meal. This can go a long way to cure bad breath just by itself.

When you have leftover food stuck in your teeth it increases the amount of food available for the bacteria to grow. It also adds to the attractiveness of the environment where bacteria prefer to live. Those who are on a vegetarian style diet have less need to cure bad breath. The proteins that are in meat cause much of the bacteria to flourish in your mouth.

How Keeping Your Gums and Teeth Clean To Cure Bad Breath

The bacterium responsible for bad breath lives in the plaque that accumulates around, as well as on your teeth. It can also go below the gum line and cause problems that may need serious dental attention if you let it go too long. When you brush your teeth thoroughly numerous times a day, it gets rid of any bacteria that are lurking in your mouth and can help to cure bad breath. Flossing daily is also important. This helps to eliminate plaque and bacteria that have settled onto your teeth and below the line of your gums.

You need to keep in mind, to cure bad breath that is caused by bacteria, you need to cut off the food supply so that they cannot spread and take over your mouth. Flossing is a huge factor in keeping your breath clean and fresh. It can not be stressed enough how important this part of your dental routine is and should be.

The first thing you should do when you realize that foul odor is emanating from your mouth is to make an appointment with the dentist to have a complete and thorough cleaning. Once this is done, you can speak to the oral hygienist that is doing the cleaning for tips and advice to help to cure bad breath and keep your mouth as clean as when it is professionally done, every single day.

Bad breath of halitosis is almost inevitable to a degree. Not everyone is aware that they suffer from the problem, but it would be extremely rare if not impossible to escape for all time without ever having an episode of this embarrassing problem. More than the problem itself is the worry that you may have this issue, without friends and acquaintances to tell you about it. Therefore, it is common to wonder what causes bad breath, even if no one has mentioned the subject of late. It is comparatively easy to keep the matter under control with a basic understanding of what causes bad breath.

Onions and garlic are the most common examples of foods with such strong odors that they remain on one's breath for a long time. Brushing teeth and using mouth fresheners may offer no more than temporary relief, because traces find their way in to exhaled breath from blood, after the ingredients have been digested. However, these kinds of aromatic foods have become so notorious that many people now avoid them as much as possible. They may still ask what causes bad breath since there are other causes for halitosis apart from smelly foods. Left over food particles are common reasons, as they rot in the mouth after getting stuck between teeth. The mouth could also harbor some types of bacteria which cause bad breath. Finally, certain medical conditions such as ketosis may be responsible for a foul smell on one's breath.

Simple Solutions to the Question: What Causes Bad Breath?

Since there is no single reason for halitosis, it is best to consult a doctor to uncover the primary reason in each separate case. A regular dental check-up should uncover whether any aspect of oral health is responsible for lingering foul odors, while blood tests can establish systemic answers to the vexed question of what causes bad breath. Halitosis could be a result of a potentially serious condition, so medical evaluation of the problem is always a good idea. However, you need not wait until you get a dental or a doctor's appointment, to take action on learning that there is a bad smell in your mouth, for there are effective steps that you can safely take on your own.

Good habits should be adequate to treat halitosis if one is in a normal state of health. Tobacco smells at least as much as food with pungent aromas, so staying away from all these influences pays off handsomely in terms of clean and fresh breath. Regular brushing and flossing may sound like advice for children, but it is surprising how many adults need regular reminders!

Feeling a bit congested in the nose? Or can't breathe at all? The reason may be an inflammation of or infection in your sinuses, causing a condition called sinusitis. Other symptoms include coughing, sneezing, feelings of tiredness, aches, and constant low fever.

Because the signs are so much the same as a cold, people with sinusitis often mistake their condition for colds. But later, when the medicines they've been taking for treating the symptoms of colds don't seem to work, they go to the doctor who then examines them and tells them that they have sinusitis.

How does Sinusitis work?

To answer that question, we must first look into what the sinuses are. They are actually hollow cavities within the skull, surrounding the nose. Each of us has four sinuses: the frontal sinuses over the eyes in the brow area, maxillary sinuses inside each cheekbone, ethmoid sinuses just behind the bridge of the nose and between the eyes, and sphenoid sinuses behind the ethmoids in the upper region of the nose and behind the eyes.

These sinuses have a mucus lining that continue on to the nasal passages. The mucus helps keep the air that passes from the nose to the nasal passages clean and clear and dehumidified. When you have a cold, the cause of that is a viral infection in the nasal passages. As a result, more mucus is secreted by the mucus lining as more white blood cells are sent to fight the viruses in the infected area. This leads to swelling of the mucus lining, causing inflammation which then becomes the precursor of sinusitis.

Full-blown sinusitis causes blockage of the nasal passages, obstructing drainage and causing post nasal drips. Because of the blockage, the excess mucus produced is trapped inside the nasal passages where they accumulate and turn foul, leading to bad breath side effect. In addition, the trapped mucus due to sinusitis can become breeding grounds for bacteria that cause bad breath side effect.

The worst thing about this bad breath side effect is that you don't usually notice it since the infection has caused your sense of smell to become off. This bad breath side effect of sinusitis could very well be an embarrassing situation waiting to happen. Why allow it to happen?

How to treat Sinusitis?

The good news is that bad breath side effect of sinusitis may be treated by simply treating the sinusitis itself. And there are dozens of different over the counter nasal decongestants and antihistamines that will more than do their job of stopping sinusitis. These drugs act by relieving congestion and drying up excess mucus. However, in doing this, some of these drugs may also inadvertently cause bad breath side effect since dryness in the mouth is one of the most frequent causes of bad breath.

Drugs like Flonase are different, however. Flonase, generic name flonase floticasone, is a steroid based prescription nasal spray that treats sinusitis but does not have a bad breath side effect. Flonase has been used by many patients with sinusitis with good results. Using Flonase on a regular basis produces best results since it may take several weeks for the medication to give maximum effect.

When it comes to bad breath remedies, nothing works like BFM. It stands for brushing, flossing, and mouthwash. Practicing good oral hygiene is perhaps the one of the most effective bad breath remedies out there, barring any medical condition that causes bad smell in your breath.

How to Take Care of Your Mouth

You basically have three areas of concern:

* Tongue
* Teeth
* Gums

Without proper oral hygiene, all three are the first areas in your mouth that are affected, leading to bad breath.

When you eat, particles of food remain in your mouth, stuck between your teeth or at the back of your tongue. These particles could attract bacteria that emit odor or they could rot, again releasing a bad smell. Brushing your teeth, flossing, cleaning your gums, and rinsing thoroughly are the best solutions for kind of problem. These bad breath remedies will remove the buildup of bacteria and get rid of the particles of food that contribute to bad odor.

As an added advantage, removing these particles of food – a breeding ground for bacteria – will also help remove plaque, which is actually the leading cause of periodontal disease.

What Types of Food can Cause Bad Breath

Certain types of food can cause bad breath. These foods include high-fat foods, meat, sugar, dairy products, and exotic spices. Sometimes you don't even need bad breath remedies to avoid getting embarrassed because of how your breath smells. Sometimes, all it takes is a little discretion on your part on what kinds of food you should eat.

Sugary foods, for instance, are risk factors for bad breath since bacteria found in the back of the throat feed off the sugar. High-fat and high-protein foods can also cause bad breath. Sometimes, these foods are not properly digested, giving off gas.

Home Remedies for Bad Breath

Besides observing good oral hygiene and avoiding certain kinds of food, there are also home bad breath remedies that you can take in order to address the problem. Apple cider vinegar, for instance, watered down and taken before each meal may help improve digestion and prevent gas.

Baking soda is also another form of bad breath remedies that you can easily get hold off. Alternatively, you can also use paste made with hydrogen peroxide and brush your teeth with it. The baking soda or hydrogen peroxide will reduce acidity in your mouth and discourage bacteria from growing there.

You might think that charcoals are only good for Friday barbecues, but you'll be surprised to know that they are actually excellent for absorbing toxins. They are also natural purifiers and are therefore good bad breath remedies for cleansing the stomach and intestines.

Gargling with water and salt, instead of mouthwash, will also help improve odor. Instead of simply masking the odor as what most mouthwash liquids do, water and salt can actually kill the bacteria that cause bad breath. These bad breath remedies also help remove mucus and food particles in your mouth.

A high protein diet is fashionable with 2 entirely different sets of people: body builders and dieters. Though the sportive and the obese are as different as chalk and cheese in most respects, both often asking "how do I cure bad breath from a high protein diet?" It is best to go on a special diet, regardless of the reason, under the direct supervision of a qualified expert, but this is not always feasible in real life. Professional sports people may need to increase muscle mass in a hurry, while social pressures may force a young person who is chronically overweight, to try a crash diet that she or he has read about somewhere.

The question "how do I cure bad breath from a high protein diet," is likely to be a signal that a special regimen of food intake has become unbalanced. This could be intentional if the intention is to burn fat quickly, but it is important to keep a body's functions within limits of normal ranges. Bad breath after starting a high protein diet is due to a specific reason which all sufferers would do well to understand: it occurs because of the build up of ketones in blood. A ketone is a malodorous chemical which your body produces when it uses fat in the absence of carbohydrates. Ketones leave the body through breath, apart from in urine and perspiration, and this is fundamentally why people on high protein diets inevitably suffer from bad breath.

How to Help When Someone Asks: "How Do I Cure Bad Breath From a High Protein Diet?"

The best way to deal with the question "how do I cure bad breath from a high protein diet," is to review if some healthy forms of carbohydrates could be added back to daily meal regimens. It is common to associate high protein with meat and sea food, but the truth is that there are many vegetarian forms of protein, which have becoming proportions of healthy carbohydrates as well. Beans are great examples of meal ingredients which will leave you with plenty of proteins, and just enough carbohydrates as well to prevent the incomplete burning of stored fats. Another approach would be to work in the sun, or to spend time in saunas, so that accumulated ketones use skin pores as alternates to breath in order to escape from the body. Drinking plenty of water will help ketones leave the body through urine, while diluting their concentrations inside mouths at the same time.

The question "how do I cure bad breath from a high protein diet," could be risky to answer on a permanent basis if you are not a doctor with focused training and experience in diet and weight management. A person who asks this question, or who suffers from bad breath, could be an undiagnosed or a poorly managed diabetic. People with inadequate insulin production may have ketones building up in blood, and this can quickly degenerate in to a life threatening situation. There is no harm in suggesting a couple of temporary measures to keel breath smelling fresh, but obdurate halitosis always needs the expert attention of a doctor.

Bad breath is caused by anaerobic bacteria that live in the back of the tongue and other areas of the mouth not exposed to oxygen. Every person has over 170 different types of these anaerobic bacteria living in their mouths. Yet even so there are many people who go through life without bad breath even when they do little more than ordinary mouth care.

Therefore, bad breath must be caused by something more than just the presence of bacteria in the mouth.

Normally, the bacteria present in our mouth are responsible for the break down of proteins found in our diet, saliva, mucous and phlegm. During the process, they release volatile sulfur compounds as waste products. These volatile sulfur compounds are highly odorous but the smell is not noticeable in individuals without bad breath. It is only when under certain conditions that the bacteria break down proteins at a much higher rate and excrete volatile sulfur compounds that the odor becomes highly noticeable and offensive.

But in addition to bacteria in the mouth, bad breath may also be a symptom of a problem in the person's bowels. Constipation bad breath, for instance, occurs when there is irregularity in the person's digestive system, causing the stool to become hard and extremely difficult to eliminate. While the condition itself – constipation – is not considered a cause of bad breath, constipation bad breath can be an indirect signal that there is an imbalance in the body processes which must be corrected.

Constipation bad breath could be due to several causes from dietary to hormonal or be even a side effect of medications and anatomical. Incidentally, normal bad breath (that is, bad breath not caused by digestive problems) may also be due to a side effect of drugs you are taking, which could dry up the mouth, causing bad breath.

Treating constipation bad breath consists in treating the constipation itself. If the problem is dietary in nature, then changing your dietary habits, laxatives, and fiber therapy could help treat the constipation and in the process the symptom of constipation bad breath. Enemas and surgery though rare may also be used to treat acute cases of constipation.

In addition, nearly any form of bad breath is treatable just by improving oral hygiene. In fact, it is safe to say that almost all cases of bad breath have something to do with a lack of proper oral hygiene on the part of the person. You may brush your teeth every after meal but if you are not doing it properly, then dental tartar and food debris could still collect in your mouth, proving as breeding ground for bacteria to proliferate. Therefore, it is important that you also make some changes in your oral hygiene practices if you want to get rid of constipation bad breath.

Are you looking for a cure for bad breath? If you suffer from bad breath, you are not alone because it is estimated that one in four people suffers from bad breath. Until you find a cure for bad breath, you may be giving people the wrong impression about yourself. Bad breath, known as halitosis, should be treated so that it does not interfere with the way others interact with you.

Oral Bacteria Causes Bad Breath

Oral bacteria that live in the mouth cause ninety percent of the cases of bad breath. Many of the bacteria live at the back of the tongue where bad breath commonly gathers. In order to get rid of the bad breath, it is necessary to dislodge the bacteria from the crevices in which it hides in the mouth.

Bacteria can flourish in the mouth, between the teeth and on the tongue, especially after eating food. Particles of food can be stuck between the teeth or in the gum line and the bacteria will then begin to thrive on it. This is where the problem of bacteria caused bad breath begins.

Get Rid Of The Bacteria

The main idea for this cure for bad breath is that you get rid of the bacteria in the gum lines, on the teeth and tongue by regular brushing everyday. You must brush at least two or three times everyday and you must brush or scrape the tongue as well. The tongue is the place where much bad breath originates because of the bacteria that live in the texture of the tongue.

When you are brushing and flossing your teeth and tongue regularly, you will be making great strides against bacteria caused bad breath. Unless you dislodge the bacteria, any mouthwash or gum you chew will only mask the bad breath caused by bacteria.

If oral bacteria causes you bad breath, your cure for it lies in regularly removing the bacteria. Unless you remove the bacteria, any mints, mouthwash or gum that you chew will only mask the odour and when the mint or candy is gone, the bad breath is back. The true cure for bad breath caused by oral bacteria is the thorough and regular cleansing of your teeth, gums and tongue.

Finding an effective cure for bad breath can be liberating for you. When you have eliminated bacteria from your mouth, you will be able to exude confidence when talking to people because you know that you have found a cure for bad breath that works.

Summary: Causes of bad breath in dogs can be traced not only to the dental and gum disease but also to kidney and liver disease.

Do you have animals, especially dogs? I, as dog lover, make sure to own a dog ever since when I was a kid. Even my whole family loves dog and we treat our favorite pet member of the family. When I got married, I left my dog with my parents and since my husband knows that dogs are my favorite pets, he got me one a few weeks before our weeding. Isn't that sweet?

As a responsible dog owner, I always make it a point to feed and clean my dog. But, it's not enough. There's more to feeding, bathing, and walking your dogs. For those who also love and own dogs (like me), it is important for you to know why dogs have bad breath and what causes bad breath in dogs.

Tooth and gum problems are the most common medical condition of cats and dogs because bad breath in dogs and other pets usually accompanied with other health problems. Even if bad breath in your pets does not bother you or you don't find it offensive, it is still best to treat the problem.

Tartar build up surrounding the teeth of your dog is the most common cause of bad breath. Just like in our case, if small food particles left in between our teeth, these food particles will decay resulting to become a friendly environment for oral bacteria to grow. And when they grow, they become plaque. Plaque and other oral infections are responsible for the bad breath in dogs. In addition, plaque sticks to the base of teeth causing inflammation and receding of gums. Eventually these gum problems contribute to the foul smell of your dog's breath.

Have you notice your puppies that puppies have different breath odor? I won't say it's stinky breath or offensive, but it's just that it smells puppy breath. This is because young puppies that is in the process of shedding their baby teeth usually salivate and bad breath. Brushing your puppies' mouth with water mixed with baking soda gives them relief and minimizes bad breath. In older pets, liver and kidney diseases usually affect the mouth; therefore, bad breath can possibly be traced through organ failure. Kidney and liver disease can lead to dental disease and dental disease can lead to liver and kidney diseases. You can immediately identify if your dog has dental problems for they usually drool.

Bad breath in dogs is treatable. You just have to be observant to the health conditions of your pets. Here are several helpful tips in the treatment of bad breath in dogs:

o Yearly general and dental check up helps you monitor the condition of your dog, including bad breath.
o To slow down the formation of plaque build up, feed your pet with a name brand commercial pet food. These crunchy food helps massage gums and gradually removes tartar
o Feed your dog with chewy treats, bones, and the like for they help minimize dental plaque.
o Brushing your pet's teeth is the best thing you can do to keep their teeth and gums healthy.
o Use mouthwash and sprays containing enzymes that dissolve plaque and help reduce bacteria. These are available in veterinary hospitals and pet shops.

Bad breath in dogs should not be taken for granted for this may lead to another serious problem. If you notice your dog's breath has an offensive smell, bring them to your veterinarian to determine the cause of their bad breath. After all, our dog deserves the best treatment we can give to them as part of the family.

Bad breath, or halitosis, usually smells like rotten eggs. Sometimes other unpleasant smells or odors may also be noticed. The cause could be traced back to sulfur compounds that are released as waste products by bacteria living inside the mouth. However, there are instances when metallic smell bad breath occurs. This unusual symptom could indicate that the individual is suffering from a condition other than simple bad breath.

How to Identify the Problem

Metallic smell bad breath is a rare symptom. Only very few people have metallic smelling breath and usually it is due to an underlying condition that may have caused unusual symptoms like metallic smell bad breath.

It should also be noted that persons who claim to have metallic smell bad breath may only describe the condition as such because their sense of smell is a little off, due to viral infection or some other cause. As such, metallic smell bad breath may well turn out to be illusory for these people. That's why it is important to have a doctor confirm the symptom first.

There are many things that can cause a metallic taste in the mouth. But having a metallic taste in the mouth does not mean that the odor coming from the mouth is also metallic. Stated otherwise, you should not make the mistake of assuming that you have metallic smell bad breath if you experience a metallic taste in your mouth.

What Causes the Problem?

As previously mentioned, metallic smell bad breath may be due to an underlying condition that the individual is not quite aware of. For instance, stomach problems, such as heartburn, jaundice, metal poisoning, and other types of poisoning, has been known to cause a metal-like taste and create a metallic smell bad breath. Dental problems, many drugs, and pregnancy are also factors that could make a person prone to this condition.

If you have any of these problems, then you now have an idea where this metallic smelling breath comes from. But again, consult your doctor before making any assumptions about your condition. Getting a second opinion wouldn't hurt either.

Treat the Problem

Since metallic smell bad breath is just a symptom of a completely different condition, solving the condition is the best treatment option you have for metallic smelling breath. But while undergoing treatment for the underlying problem, you can temporarily solve the malady of metallic smell bad breath by taking strong breath mints or other strong flavors that can overpower an unpleasant one. Lemon cloves and cinnamon are often very effective for temporary relief.

Furthermore, oral hygiene is a must, whether you have bad breath or not. There are over 170 different types of bacteria that thrive in your mouth, feeding on the leftover foods there. As they digest these foods, they release odorous substances that cause bad breath. By keeping your mouth and teeth clean, you minimize the population of bacteria in your mouth and cure bad breath.

Bad breath, or halitosis, is a fairly common malady. Usually, the cause is some kind of dental problem or the foods we eat. Plaque, food particles, and stale saliva provide excellent breeding ground for bacteria in our mouths to thrive and proliferate, releasing odorous substances known as volatile sulfur compounds.

Experts say that 85 to 90% of bad breath cases emanate from the mouth and only a very few could actually trace the odor back to someplace other than the mouth. These areas often include the gastrointestinal tract, the back of the throat, the lungs, and, of course, the tonsils.

Only about 3% of bad breath cases are actually tonsils bad breath, or bad breath as a result of an infection or inflammation of the tonsils.

What are tonsils?

Tonsils are located in the throat, right near the opening of your esophagus – that tube responsible for letting in food from your mouth to your stomach. Since the tonsils are located in the throat, most people believe that the tonsils are actually part of the gastrointestinal tract.

Well, they couldn't be more wrong.

Tonsils are, in fact, part of your immune system. They release antibodies that kill bacteria living in the mouth. If you've ever seen a tonsil up close, you will notice tiny holes on its surface. Occasionally, bacteria end up stuck in these tiny holes. The tonsils react by killing these bacteria and squirting them out through the throat.

What causes tonsils bad breath?

However, sometimes the tonsils fail to squirt these dead bacteria and dead antibodies out. As a result, the matter stays in the tonsils and calcifies, eventually turning into tonsilloliths ("tonsil stones"). Although they are only about half the size of a head of a match, they can smell quite nasty, causing the very condition we are talking about here – tonsils bad breath.

Other than tonsils bad breath, tonsilloliths do not cause any other medical problems. As such, not many doctors are even aware of them. In most cases of bad breath that don't emanate from the mouth, the odorous smell is caused by sinusitis, reduced mucus flow, or a foreign body (rarely). That is why tonsils bad breath is sometimes misdiagnosed as caused by a blockage in the nasal passages.

How can you stop tonsils bad breath?

Tonsils bad breath is essentially caused by bacteria. Remember that tonsilloliths are composed of dead bacteria and dead antibodies, which the tonsils released as an immunodefense reaction. If the bacteria hadn't gotten into the tonsils in the first place, they, along with the antibodies, wouldn't have ended up stuck inside the tonsils and calcified, causing tonsils bad breath. This goes without saying then that one way to get rid of tonsils bad breath is to reduce the bacterial population in the mouth. And how can you do that? Through good oral hygiene.

There is a growing list of foods that are not only nutritious but are functional as well. Functional in the sense that they contain various beneficial properties that can promote health. Chewing gum and bad breath-stopping properties have also made it to the list.

Researchers at the University of Illinois in Chicago has recently conducted a study on chewing gum and bad breath in an effort to find a cure for this often embarrassing condition.

With findings presented at the recent annual meeting of the International Association for Dental Research, the study found that Big Red – the popular cinnamon-flavored chewing gum made by Wrigley's – has the capability of reducing bacteria in the mouth. These bacteria have long been identified by scientists as the reason why some people develop bad breath.

Christine Wu, professor of periodontics and associate dean for research at the UIC College of Dentistry commented that the connection between chewing gum and bad breath was not surprising. The gum, Big Red, used in the study contained cinnamic aldehyde, a plant essential oil used for flavoring.

In her previous studies on chewing gum and bad breath as well as natural antibacterial agents from plant sources that can suppress oral pathogens, Wu found that most of the plant essential oils that she tested can inhibit the growth of bacteria responsible for periodontal infections and cavities.

She also states that by inhibiting the growth of these bacteria, the release of volatile substances causing bad breath is prevented.

"In laboratory tests, some of these oils also prevented the growth of three species of oral bacteria associated with bad breath and the production of volatile compounds that cause the unpleasant smell," she explains.

After learning of the laboratory findings from the Wrigley Company in Chicago, Wu decided to launch a clinical trial on the effects of chewing gum and bad breath. Using 15 subjects who were made to chew on one of three gums for 20 minutes, the study sought to compare three types of gums – one with cinnamic aldehyde (Big Red), one with natural flavors but no cinnamic aldehyde and one that is made entirely of base with neither flavors or oil.

Afterwards, the subjects were made to stop chewing the gum. Their saliva was then tested and compared with samples collected before the test or chewing began. Through microbiological analysis, the study showed that the gum containing cinnamic aldehyde was able to reduce the number of anaerobic bacteria in the saliva by 50 percent. The gum was also particularly effective on anaerobic bacteria that usually resided on the back of the tongue, reducing the population by 40 percent.

"Our study shows that chewing gum can be a functional food, having significant impact on oral hygiene over the short term, if it contains antimicrobial agents such as cinnamic aldehyde or other natural active compounds," Wu said. "The product just doesn't mask foul mouth odor; it eliminates the bacteria that causes it, at least temporarily."

Summary: Smoking tobacco can cause bad breath and chewing tobacco does the same thing.

Bad breath or in medical term halitosis is a result of poor oral and dental hygiene and can be a sign of other health problems. In addition, it is also caused by eating raw onions or garlic. Bad breath is sometimes temporary and will be gone in a matter of days. Most commonly, bad breath is caused by anaerobic bacteria living in your mouth. We all have these bacteria in our mouth, which only means that we can have bad breath anytime anywhere.

If you don't immaculately brush and floss your teeth and scrape or brush your tongue every time you brush your teeth, bad breath will result. If you don't practice proper oral and dental habit, you chances of having an unpleasant breath smell are huge! Imagine the food particles stuck in between your teeth, around the gums, and on your tongue which are not removed. The odor-causing bacteria will breed happily on those friendly environments you created for them, which will eventually, lead to bad breath!

Bad breath and chewing tobacco is interrelated with each other. Smoking tobacco products can cause bad breath and chewing tobacco based- product can also cause breath. Basically, any tobacco based product if smoked or chewed not only cause bad breath, but also stain your teeth, reduce your ability to taste food (as tobacco affect your taste buds), and damage gum tissues.

Smoking tobacco can have a drying effect in your mouth, and dry mouth is likely to have bad breath. The absence of saliva in your mouth makes the odor-causing bacteria to grow, thus results to bad breath. Both by smoking or chewing tobacco- based product, the damages that that it does to your teeth and mouth are the same and they all lead to bad breath.

You may think that chewing isn't that dangerous than having smoke in your lungs which tobacco-based does. You're wrong! Chewing tobacco is as dangerous as smoking tobacco it self. The nicotine found in the tobacco is an addictive drug and it sticks to your teeth. Have you notice the dark brown build-up on the teeth of smokers, especially those with poor oral and dental hygiene? That is nicotine! It damages your teeth and deteriorates your gums resulting to a gum disease. You should also know that gum disease is one of the biggest contributing factors of bad breath.

If you want to keep your mouth as healthy and fresh all the time, you need to invest time and effort for its maintenance. You should eliminate your problem with bad breath and chewing tobacco habit if you want to keep your mouth's sweet and fresh breath

Do you have a stinky breath? Do you notice your friends and acquaintances trying to back off from you every time you speak? Well, bad breath or halitosis, as it is known medically, is a very common condition that affects millions of people. It is common and not something fatal, but bad breath can be a big turn off, the reason that many people are trying to find ways to totally cure it.

Curing bad breath is as easy as pie. Yes, that's the truth. But, it is important to make sure that you are eager and ready to invest efforts and time for you to successfully prevent or cure it. Curing bad breath needs action, dedication and interest.

To begin, it is wise to consider oral hygiene. Oral hygiene, in fact, has long been considered as the first vital step to curing bad breath. So start by cleaning your mouth daily. Brush or clean your teeth, tongue and gums to eliminate the bad breath-causing bacteria. Scrape your tongue first thing in the morning and before bed. Apply a dental floss or wash your mouth with some kind of mouthwashes. This way, the decaying food particles and bacteria that cause bad breath can be eliminated.

However, when curing bad breath with a mouthwash, it is best to consider first if the mouthwash you are using contains antibacterial properties or is capable of neutralizing the volatile sulfur compounds. You can't expect a mouthwash to work on its own for curing bad breath without these properties. In the first place, a mouthwash that is antibacterial can greatly play a part in curing bad breath as it helps to lessen the total number of anaerobic bacteria that are present in your mouth. And, since the volatile sulfur compounds are the primary cause of bad breath, it is best to find a treatment that is capable of neutralizing these bad breath-causing compounds. Note that if a mouthwash can help to minimize the concentration of these compounds, the more pleasant your breath will be.

Curing bad breath also involves knowledge about the foods that may trigger bad breath to occur. Yes, the type of foods you intake may be one of the biggest reasons for your bad breath. So it is best to watch out for what kind of food you eat. Among the most common bad breath-causing foods are high-fat foods, sugar, exotic spices, and some dairy products. Also, foods that are very high in acid can trigger the growth of bacteria in your mouth, and those that are high in protein and fat may not digest well and give off gas, causing bad breath in the long run. To prevent it, try to eat more fruits that contain digestive enzymes. According to some experts, vegetables can also help, especially the leafy green ones. And, if you want to see positive results, try to avoid excessive intake of beverages such as coffee and tea.

There are also other possible, effective ways for curing bad breath. Certain traditional and modern medications are out there for you to consider. Perhaps the best way for curing bad breath is to combine the traditional and modern techniques, and never to forget consulting a dentist about any of the available treatments before using it.

Dog bad breath is a condition characterized by an unpleasant smell coming from your dog's mouth. It's more than just "doggie breath," which is normal enough to some extent. However, when the breath becomes too offensive even for you, the owner who loves their pet so much, then you better have the veterinarian check if your dog has dog bad breath, or what is medically known as halitosis.

The condition can be attributed to various dog bad breath causes. But usually, it is due to poor oral hygiene. Dental tartar and plaque are common dog bad breath causes, just as food debris and stale saliva can cause an unpleasant odor to emanate from the mouth.

But in addition to oral causes of dog bad breath, the condition may also be caused by some underlying disease, such as the following:

* Abscessed tooth or teeth
* Periodontitis or inflammation of the tissue surrounding the tooth
* Gingivitis or inflammation of the gums (gum disease)
* Oral neoplasia or tumors of the mouth
* Oral ulceration
* Bone or hair stuck in mouth
* Severe kidney disease
* Lung diseases, such as lung cancer
* Metabolic disease, such as diabetes and uremia
* Respiratory disease, such as rhinitis, sinusitis, and neoplasia
* Gastrointestinal, such as megaesophagus, neoplasia, and foreign body
* Dermatologic, such as lip fold pyoderma
* Dietary, such as fetid foodstuffs or eating stool
* Non-periodontal oral disease, such as orthodontic, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, and neoplasia
* Foreign bodies
* Trauma including electric cord injury
* Open fractures
* Caustic agents
* Infectious agents including bacteria, fungi, and viruses
* Autoimmune disease
* Eosinophilic granuloma complex

The above dog bad breath causes, however, are extremely rare as most cases of this condition are associated with oral problems. So practicing good oral hygiene is still the most effective method of stopping dog bad breath causes from causing any more problems.

If you notice an offensive odor from your pet's mouth, the first thing you should do is to check for any dental or oral problems. Check the teeth to see if there are any plaques, tartar, or black spots in the tongue or the teeth. These are usually signs of a dental problem that may have been causing bad breath in your dog.

If you don't observe any of these signs, check the fold of the lips. Sometimes, the lip folds may contain an infection, called pyoderma, which emits a smell that is reminiscent of dog bad breath.

Also, try changing the foodstuff you are feeding your dog. It could be that the dog bad breath causes you are dealing with involve the kind of food you are giving him. If all else fails, consult the veterinarian for further advice on what to do to help cure your dog's bad breath.

Most cases of bad breath are caused by bacteria living in the mouth. These bacteria breaks down proteins found in the foods you eat – proteins which contain cysteine and methionine, both amino acids rich in sulfur.

Have you ever smelled a rotten egg? Well, the cause of that unpleasant odor is actually the sulfur compound Hydrogen sulfide. When the bacteria in your mouth come into contact with cysteine and methionine, a reaction occurs, causing the release of the sulfur compounds contained therein. These sulfur compounds include Hydrogen sulfide, Methyl mecraptan, and other odorous substances that cause bad breath.

Majority of bad breath cases, about 85 to 90%, emanate from the mouth. The other ten percent could come from the back of the throat, the sinuses, the lungs, and even the tonsils.

Bad breath because of tonsils is an extremely rare case of bad breath and not many people are even aware of it. Now, you may have heard of the condition called tonsillitis, which is an inflammation of the tonsils due to a bacterial or viral infection. The bacteria, Streptococcus pyogenes, infect the tonsils, causing them to become inflamed and collect pus. When this happens, bad breath because of tonsils occurs.

Another instance where bad breath because of tonsils could occur is when your tonsils form what are called tonsilloliths or tonsil stones. Your tonsils are actually made up of soft tissue with tiny holes or pockets lining its surface. These holes serve as openings through which the immune system of the body releases antibodies to combat bacteria in the mouth.

Sometimes, however, pus (made up of dead bacteria and dead antibodies) may end up stuck between these holes, blocking the passages. After some time, the pus calcifies and become hard as stones (tonsilloliths) so that the tonsils become inflamed and infected due to the blockage. This in turn will lead to bad breath because of tonsils.

Bad breath because of tonsils is not always caused by bacteria. Sometimes, what you believe is bad breath because of tonsils may well turn out to be something else entirely or turn out to be bad breath due to sinusitis or some other condition. It could be caused by a viral infection, such as colds, which cause postnasal drip symptoms – a condition commonly associated with bad breath. Therefore, it is important that you confirm that you really have bad breath because of tonsils and not because of some other reason.

Ask your doctor for some advice. He will probably examine you for tonsillitis or presence of tonsilloliths. X-rays and scans of your sinuses may also be conducted to ensure that the symptoms are not related to some other respiratory condition. If it happens that you have tonsillitis which is causing bad breath, there are several medications available to alleviate the infection.

Medically known as halitosis, bad breath is a condition so common that it affects people of every age, gender and race. 75% of the world's total popular population is affected by it, either temporarily or chronically. The bad news is bad breath or halitosis can be the reason for deep embarrassment and poor self-worth, making it truly an unfavorable condition that needs to be considered, not to be ignored.

Bad breath is caused and triggered by a number of factors. Some are serious, while others are just normally occurring. But generally speaking, the main culprit of bad breath is the bacteria that normally live in the mouth and tend to grow into numbers once triggered by certain conditions, like the formation of dark mucus due to a post nasal drip or sinusitis.

When you develop a sinusitis or post nasal drip, bad breath occurs in a way that the dark mucus that is continually produced by the cells lining the passages of your sinus tends to drip down your throat and nose. What's worse is, the dark mucus not only causes the coughing spasms that is associated with the post nasal drip, but it will coat or cover the back of your throat, as well as the back of your tongue. This is where the connection between bad breath and dark mucus occurs as when the mucus sits in those areas, it will draw bacteria to rest and breed there, resulting to bad breath.

Fortunately, bad breath and dark mucus can be eliminated. Although there is no specific cure for these conditions, several ways are suggested to at least reduce bad breath and dark mucus. One of the best methods is simply to drink plenty of water. As you may know, drinking lots of water is a healthy habit to be accustomed to. But more to that, drinking lots of water will help you reduce the layer of dark mucus responsible for bad breath. It will wash away the bacteria that thrive on the mucus, leaving you mucus-free and bad breath-free.

You can also reduce or eliminate bad breath and dark mucus by avoiding alcohol and caffeine. According to some health care professionals, this is highly vital when you are affected by sinusitis that causes the buildup of dark mucus. Alcohol and caffeine must be avoided for one simple reason – they will only make the problem worse.

Smoking is but another culprit of bad breath and dark mucus. It leaves a negative effect to your sinuses as it tends to irritate your sinuses, then leaving a chance for more bacteria to grow. Aside from that, smoking can stain your teeth and may even cause tooth decay, which is but another breeding ground of the odor-causing bacteria. So if you want to reduce or get rid of bad breath and dark mucus, then start cutting back from smoking.

Finally, bad breath and dark mucus can be eliminated if you will cut down on dairy products. The idea behind this is that all dairy products have some fat content, which can make the existing dark mucus thicker. If this happens, your bad breath will become intense. So start doing the cut down as early as now.

Known by many as halitosis, bad breath is a common condition that affects millions of people from different walks of life. It is deemed as nothing fatal, but bad breath can be a cause of embarrassment for many. It may even lower the person's self-esteem, and if not treated as early as possible, it has the tendency to become chronic, then affecting not only your career, but your entire life as well.

Bad breath problem is apparently identified by its smell. The smell of bad breath is commonly known to be distinctive, unpleasant and offensive. If you are affected by this condition, you might notice someone or your friends backing off from you or covering their nose every time you utter a word. Or, maybe someone had frankly told you before that you have bad breath.

Well, many people aren't aware of the smell of their own breath. Many have even tried to deny when someone told them that they have bad breath. And, in an attempt to determine the smell of bad breath, many people tried to cup their hands between their mouth and nose. Unfortunately, you cannot easily tell if your breath smells bad simply because you become accustomed to your own odors.

But, that doesn't mean that there's no hope for you to determine how your breath smells. Undoubtedly, one of the best ways to know the smell of bad breath is to have a trusted friend or loved one smell it for you. This too is embarrassing for some, so if you don't want to do this, I have a suggestion for you – simply take a cotton ball or a gauze pad and wipe near the middle of your tongue. If you want to know the smell of your own breath, simply smell it for odor.

The option is not just limited there. The smell of bad breath can be more accurately identified by the use of a device known as halimeter. Dentists often use this device. The patient who wishes to know the smell of bad breath is simply asked to blow into a straw like tube that is attached to the halimeter. The machine then measures the amount of volatile sulfur compounds in the breath. The more sulfur volatile compounds are found, the more disgusting the breath smells.

Now, it is important to note that seeing a dentist is not only best if you want to know the smell of bad breath. Every people need to see a dentist not for that purpose alone, but for proper dental care. A dental check up is also highly needed as there are some instances when the smell of bad breath is caused by a more serious health condition. For example, many reports have revealed that a fruity smell of bad breath may signal ketoacidosis, which may occur in diabetes and is a potentially life-threatening condition. Aside from that, a fecal smell of bad breath may signal bowel obstruction, which is but another unfavorable condition. And, much to your surprise, people who are affected by a chronic kidney failure may have an ammonia-like breath odor.

Given all those facts, the key to determining the smell of bad breath and maintaining good health is to see an expert. That's basically the best thing that you can do not only to prevent or treat you bad breath, but to promote good health and well-being.

Summary: Bad breath because of tonsils is caused by streptococcus pyogenes bacteria that can inflame and make tonsils produce pus, hence the cause of bad breath.

Bad breath is a common problem of adults, children, and even to our pets. There are lots of causes of bad breath and the most common is the odor-causing bacteria in our mouth. Bad breath is admittedly a big deal, don't you think so? This is a very disturbing flaw and the person might not even be aware of how terrible his/mouth smells. All the more you have to be alarmed if this happens even after you have practised utmost oral and dental hygiene. Don't narrow your ideas of bad breath to oral and dental problems alone for there are a huge number or reasons for your bad breath; for example, bad breath because of tonsils. When you talk about bad breath because of tonsils, it's now a different condition compared to bad breath caused by bacteria living on our tongue breaking down cells and proteins present in the mouth. When bacteria settle and infect your tonsils, the condition is called tonsillitis. And bad breath because of tonsils occurs.

The bacteria that cause tonsillitis are frequently Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria. Tonsillitis is commonly known as strept throat. The infected tonsils become very inflamed, developing pockets of pus in the tonsillar crypts and causing an extremely sore throat, usually accompanied by a high fever and you can hardly swallow even water; which is why tonsillitis needs immediate medical attention.

When the affected tonsil produces pus the result is bad breath. It is only in strept throat that your tonsils produce pus, which causes bad breath. Bad breath because of tonsils is described to have a rotten meat smell that is slightly different from the rotten-egg-sulfur smell that ordinary breath produces. A person with strept throat normally feels very unwell, and has great difficulty swallowing, even its own saliva. Although, bad breath because of tonsils in the worst case of tonsillitis, there is a greater risk of the infection being followed by fever that can cause damage to your heart.

The majority of tonsillitis cases will get better on their own, but antibiotic medications must be taken to prevent other diseases from developing following the strept throat. If you notice bad breath because of tonsils inflammation, see your doctor, get findings, and ask for prescription as to the best antibiotics to be taken.

But, not all sore throat are caused by streptococcus pyogenes, alternatively, many sore throats are caused by viruses, or by bacteria that have no serious consequences. They may cause discomfort for a few days and does not need antibiotic medications, before you know it, they're gone. Bad breath from a sore throat will be gone when the sore throat's gone.

If you think you have bad breath because of tonsils, but you don't have an extreme sore throat, this means that the problem is not located on the tonsils, but in your tongue or in any other areas of your mouth where odor-causing bacteria grow. If the problem still exists for days, see your doctor for diagnosis.

It should be simple to keep bad breath at bay. While it is common knowledge that mouth fresheners act instantaneously, simple acts of personal hygiene can produce more lasting results. Most causes of halitosis are due to nothing more than carelessness or inconvenience. It is not always possible to brush teeth after a meal away from home, and bad breath is inevitable if you have enjoyed an exotic dish full of aromatic spices. Similarly, flossing can be most inconvenient, though traces of food stuck inside the mouth, will lose no time in raising a stink!

Not all causes of halitosis are beyond reasonable control. Some people may develop bad habits of failing to brush and floss before retiring for the night, or may simply not drink enough water. Irregular visits to dentists will inevitably lead to bacterial colonies finding refuge in the gums, and they can be awfully difficult to dislodge completely. There are some beneficial bacteria which reside in a healthy oral cavity, but the trick is to keep the harmful ones away. Overall, a combination of adequate personal hygiene and regular dental examinations should suffice to rule out the usual causes of halitosis.

Metabolic Causes of Halitosis

Diabetes can be free of symptoms in its early stages. Surveys show that large numbers of people in all countries may suffer from diabetes for years, without the condition being detected. This results in the build up of ketones in blood. Ketones are highly odorous chemicals which are formed when the body burns fat instead of carbohydrate for energy. Ketones are eliminated from blood through perspiration, in urine, and by way of exhaled breath. The latter joins the list of causes of halitosis, and it is a matter which a dentist cannot resolve on his or her own. This is why a dentist may send a patient to a physician, when there is nothing in the mouth which could result in halitosis. However, it is also possible that bacterial infections and diabetes are related, since high blood sugar predisposes people to immune deficiencies.

Sudden changes in diet can also cause bad breath. Fasting causes ketosis, as does a high protein diet, which also excludes carbohydrates. The bodies of people who try to lose weight rapidly, or to increase their musculatures, tend to use fat for energy, and smelly ketones build up in blood, finding their way to the lungs in the process. This is why special diets should be custom prepared for each individual by qualified experts.

When you are suffering with bad breath, it can affect your personal life as well as your professional life. Most people will not come right up to you and tell you that you have bad breath; they will just talk about you to others behind your back. It can be an embarrassing fact of life when you have bad breath. But what exactly is bad breath cause?

Common Bad Breath Cause

Most people have the worst breath in the morning when they first wake up. You may be okay for a few hours after you brush, but as the day progresses, the stink of bad breath may creep slowly back into your mouth and make the people you deal with cringe.

Sometimes bad breath cause is situational. It may be you notice your breath after you have eaten a meal that is full of garlic or onions. It could be that your breath smells like smoke from cigarettes or cigars. Another bad breath cause that is considered situational is alcoholic beverages.

Another bad breath cause could be occasional. Many people use gums, sprays and other types of breath fresheners to mask the effects of halitosis. This is another name that is given to bad breath. Even if you use breath fresheners, if the underlying bad breath cause is poor dental hygiene or certain foods you have eaten, they wont last very long in masking the odors.

Those who suffer bad breath cause that is chronic have the worst case of halitosis. Chronic bad breath is characterized by a persistent fetid odor that emanates from your mouth and/or nose. Most who suffer with chronic bad breath have excellent oral hygiene and don't know what to do about their condition.

The most common bad breath cause is from a bacterium that is naturally present in your mouth that is feeding off the food particles that is left over from when you last ate. There are many ways you can fight the effects of this. One is using a good toothbrush that will get in between teeth. Many people neglect the inside of their teeth as well as their back teeth when they are brushing.

You should be sure that you brush your teeth for five minutes or more. Any less time and you are not reaching all the places in your mouth that will be a bad breath cause. You need to be aware that all toothpastes and mouthwashes are not created equal too.

Some products that are to be used for oral hygiene exacerbate the problem instead of helping it. You should use products that have baking soda and peroxide as their main ingredients. These two products can help bad breath cause and allow you to feel more confident when you are having face to face conversations with colleagues or someone you want to get to know better.

Bad breath affects children in the same way it affects adults. It is not necessarily a sign of a more serious health condition though, but a frequent bad breath in children can be distressing not only for the child, but for the parents too.

There are a number of causes associated with frequent bad breath in children. Some medical researches have noted that a frequent bad breath in children may be caused normally by mouth breathing due to colds, allergies, sinus infections, or enlargement of tonsils blocking the nasal passages; dehydration; thumb sucking; increased bacterial activity in the mouth at night; infrequent snacking and drinking throughout the day; and improper brushing. All of these are deemed culprits for the reason that they tend to cause mouth drying, which in turn allows the increase of the number of bacteria in the mouth resulting to a stinky breath.

Knowing the culprits, it is now so far understandable that the real root of frequent bad breath in children is mouth drying. So to prevent or cure frequent bad breath in children, it is necessary to maintain the saliva production so to decrease the mouth bacteria. But, the question is in what possible way will the saliva production be increased? Well, there are actually a lot of ways that parents may consider to treat their child's bad breath. One of the best ways is to ensure that your child gets plenty of fluids throughout the day. This is pretty self-explanatory as less fluids means less saliva, and less saliva means a dryer mouth. So if possible, offer frequent drinks throughout the day as it may helps flush out the odor-causing bacteria in your child's mouth.

In case of allergy and colds, a frequent bad breath in children can be prevented by treating the problem with saline or a nasal aspirator suctioned in your child's nose. You can apply this to your child at night before he or she goes to bed. In this way, post-nasal drip as well as mouth breathing can be reduced. Post-nasal drip and mouth breathing as mentioned earlier are two common causes of frequent bad breath in children.

To further treat frequent bad breath in children, try to teach your children the importance of oral hygiene. Make your child aware that proper cleaning of the mouth right after every meal is very important in treating frequent bad breath he or she is suffering from. Also, teach your child the proper way of brushing the teeth. Assist your child, but while you are helping, make sure that your child knows the importance of brushing not only the teeth, but also the tongue and sides of the mouth. Also teach your child the proper way of flossing.

If after doing all of these suggestions mentioned above and you still find your child suffering from frequent bad breath, don't hesitate to call or see a doctor. A frequent bad breath in children that appears after four to five days of the initial treatment may signal something serious. It could mean an infection, or something that is chronic. So call your dentist or your child's physician and talk about the problem.
