When you have discovered that diabetes is a disease you must live with for the rest of your life, a key factor in most every case will be the use of various medications in order to minimize future complications from diabetes, as well as keeping your body in a healthy state for the rest of your life. This is your new reality in one that nobody can force you to comply with. In other words, it is your duty to take full responsibility for your medications and keeping up with your treatments.

No one can do it for you

As strange as it may sound, there are many diabetics out there who just plain refuse to handle the responsibilities of proper insulin treatment and getting the right medications in order to maintain their health.

Yes, you can go to the doctor and get diagnosed with diabetes. Yes, your doctor can properly assist you in medical advice as well as prescribe you the appropriate medications. And yes, you can hire outside help to make life much easier such as a professional dietitian. However, backing these responsibilities with action is totally up to you. Only you can commit 100% to taking your medications and faithfully applying your knowledge of these medications so that you are taking the right doses and at the appropriate times.

What you should know about your diabetes medications

Medications can often be a little tricky when it comes to following a regimen and avoiding side effects. Many of them are extremely potent and must be mixed carefully if using other drugs at the same time. Below are a few things that you should know when taking your diabetes medications:

1. Are you taking your medications with the appropriate dosages? Are you following doctor's orders and ingesting them at the right time of the day or night?

2. Are you following the instructions of the meds when it comes to taking them with or without food?

3. Do you know if your medications are okay to mix with any other meds that you may be taking? Were you honest with your doctor about other nonprescription drugs you may be using?

4. How well are you educated about the side effects of your medications? Have you asked your doctor what to expect?

5. Will these side effects cause conditions that you may not be able to handle? Have you considered whether or not the side effects may interfere with your work or other activities which could prove to be dangerous under the influence of certain medical drugs, like driving a car or operating heavy machinery?

6. Should you experience major side effects which could be very dangerous to you or other people, are you well equipped with an antidote that will relieve them immediately?

There are many different kinds of diabetes medicine out there that you may be asked to take. When you are first diagnosed with having diabetes you may first be asked to change your diet. When you go back to the doctor for a check up and they see that you are still having some fluctuation in your sugar levels you could be asked to take some medication that is in the form of pills. When you are taking the pills that were subscribed to you make sure that you are going to follow the direction to perfection in what the doctor and pharmacist tell you. Then you know that the medication that you are given will help you out with the diabetes.

If you are one of the many people that may need to take insulin out there make sure that you are taking to the right way. If you think that you can skip a dose because your numbers are running good you are wrong. This is also true for the pills that you may need to take for diabetes medicine. One thing with the diabetes medication it is going to be given to you so that you are going to feel better instead of getting worse in the long run. You do need to make sure that you are taking your prescriptions honestly because if you do not then you are going to regret it in the long run. You know that you do not want to end up in the hospital from diabetes complications so why would you bother taking the chance.

The best thing that you can do is take all the diabetes medication that you are asked to take. Your doctor will know what kind and dose is going to be best for you and your situation. So make sure that you are taking to heart what your doctor is telling you as far as what to take for your medication to help control your diabetes. They really do know what is going to be the best for you and your diabetes, that way you are going to be able to help get the glucose levels under control.

If you suffer from diabetes then by law you are prohibited from working with certain organizations. This doesn't mean that you cannot follow your career goals and strive to accomplish the work you desire, but "where" exactly you can work is definitely slightly limited.

The FBI says no to diabetics

One such example of an area in which will not employ you due to diabetes is the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Of course not everybody aspires to be a member of this elite governmental agency, but if you have always wanted to work for the FBI, then having diabetes means that you must look for another line of work. The FBI has a strict policy called a "blanket ban" which denies employment to specific groups of people. One of these groups are men and women who require insulin.

You may not think it's fair for the FBI to practice such discriminatory action for people that have diabetes, but because the policy is so strict, there is no additional background information on individual which would change the rules. It doesn't matter how healthy you are, how young you are, or how well you manage your diabetes, if you need insulin then you are automatically shut out from the opportunity to work at the FBI.

The Military says no to diabetics

Joining the armed forces is one of most patriotic decisions a person can make. I should know because I personally served eight years in the United States Navy. It was the best time of my life and I'll always feel proud for obligating myself to serve the duty in which I felt I owed to this great country. However, had I been a diabetic then there would be no chance at all in signing up.

Just like the FBI and its policies, the military won't even consider accepting a man or woman that has diabetes, regardless of what type and how well it is managed. You are ineligible to serve. And if a person is currently serving in the military and then gets diagnosed with diabetes, either type 1 or type 2, then they may be discharged automatically and sent home to search out a different career.

Although it doesn't make that much sense, those of the rules. There are many people who successfully manage their diabetes and can do a great deal service to their country, but unlike other military services around the world, the United States will not take the risk.

What is a sign of diabetes? This is a question that many people are asking any more. There are a few things that could be a sign of diabetes. They could be frequent urination, over weight, feeling real hungry, being fatigue, irritability, burred vision, and some unusual weight loss. That is to just name a few different sign of diabetes to use as reference but there are many more things your body will do to let you know about how your blood sugar levels are either high or low.

With some of the usual signs of diabetes, there are many different ideas out there to take in to mind as well. They could be things like when you get up in the morning and feel real dizzy and sick when you are walking around you could have low or high sugar levels. You will want to keep track of how often it happens so you can talk to your doctor about it. You may see some people that do have diabetes that are unable to make a small trip to the fridge because of being to dizzy. There are some that all they want to do is lay around all the time because of being dizzy. Really that is not good for them because when you are lying around all the time your body is not getting rid or producing the sugar like it should be.

The worse thing you can do is ignore the signs of diabetes because you are not just hurting yourself you are also hurting all of your family that does care about your health. You may think that they do not care because they are only around for holidays or when they want something. But you do need to think about the ones that call you everyday to just see how you are feeling. So do not ignore the signs of diabetes go to your doctor and have them check your sugar levels so you are not putting our health at risk. I think that your doctor would rather have you pestering him or her for a blood sugar test then something happening to you later on because you did ignore the signs of diabetes.

For the most part juvenile diabetes symptoms are going to be the same as for the adults. They can be symptoms of bed wetting when they are usually dry at night, blurred vision, and extreme hunger when they are eating right, sudden unexplainable weight loss, weakness, extreme fatigue, irritability, but the worse symptom would be a sugar coma. You may even want to keep an eye on your children when they are throwing up and complaining about stomach pains. There are going to be many times it is just going to be the flu but that could even be part of the juvenile diabetes symptoms.

Really it is hard to decipher which one of the symptoms are going to be part of diabetes and what ones are going to be from the flu or the weather. No matter what the symptoms may be you will need to keep a close eye on your children because of the rise of diabetes in children any more.

You know that you do not want to end up sitting at the hospital because your child is there because of the sugar coma that they are in. You really need to make sure that you take you child to the doctors at least once a year for a physical and if you notice that they are having any complications at school that could be a good sign of getting them some help because if they are unable to concentrate at school they be having problems with their glucose level.

If you think about it when it comes to juvenile diabetes symptoms, you may think that there are going to be more distinctive symptoms out there but they are going to be symptoms of the flue or if your child is tried after a long day out playing.

You will want to make yourself informative one what to expect in juvenile diabetes symptoms if you think that your child may be at risk of getting the incurable disease. They may develop diabetes if their mother and father have diabetes and how they are living so you will want to make sure that you know what to look for as far as juvenile diabetes symptoms.

There are many different diabetes drugs for you to take to help you control the sugar levels in your body. You may believe that the best drug to treat diabetes is herbs and that could be all that you choose to take for treatment. With all the progress that has been made now days. There are many other drugs that you are able to take to help with the sugar levels. You can take different pills that are going to help with the blood sugar levels. Or your doctor may have you start to take insulin to help control you blood sugar levels. It may all depend on how much medicine you will need to control your blood glucose level. So ask you doctor what would be the best option for you as far as diabetes drugs for you to take.

The best thing that you are able to do for yourself is to take the prescriptions that you have been subscribed. When you visit with your doctor you are going to notice that he or she will know exactly what you should take for diabetes. When it comes to taking the drugs that are prescribed you will want to make sure that you are following the directions that are given with them. You will not want to make any changes to the drugs without your doctor's approval.

No matter what you believe that is the best drug for you there is going to really one person that really knows what is the best diabetes drug for you and that will be your doctor. When it comes to your health do you really want to take a chance on what other people say when they do not have the degree to say that they are able to give the advice? You may think that it going to be worth it but in the long run I don't know if it really it. It is going to be best to go to the doctors to really get the best advice for what kind of diabetes drug you should take to help stabilize the blood glucose levels.

There are many different things to worry about when you are pregnant. You may have not thought about diabetes and pregnancy before. You may not have thought about it but I bet that you doctor had. That is one of the tests that are being done when they send you for blood work when you first get the news about being pregnant.

With the blood work they will be able to see if you are going to be at risk for diabetes while pregnant. If you have some high numbers from the blood work that they sent you for you may have to get retested for your sugar levels. There are other ways that you are going to be tested during your pregnancy as well as blood work. When you first go to the doctor's office they will test you at each visit so they are able to keep an eye on your sugar levels.

If they would say about diabetes and pregnancy to you there is a chance that you are going to get chills up your spine. That is mainly because then you are going to be worried about your unborn child. You should not fear because your doctor is going to be there to help you out and let you know what to do for the diabetes and pregnancy. They may start you off with a strict diet and lots of exercise. That is one of the best things that you can do for diabetes and pregnancy.

In reality that is even good if you do not have diabetes while you are pregnant. The one thing that you will want to make sure that you are going to do is to listen to what your doctor is telling you. They are not going to give you advice that is going to harm you and your baby at any time. They just want to make sure that you both are going to be healthy after the pregnancy as well as during it. Just make sure that you are following all of your doctor's advice and eating right plus getting your exercise so you do not have difficulties during and after the pregnancy.

When it comes to needing diabetes supply where are you going to go for them? There are many options out there for you to choose from. You would be able to go thru one of the many mail order systems out there to receive you diabetes supply. Or you can go to your local pharmacist for the diabetic supply that is needed. No matter where you go you need to have them for your use. You do not want to have any problems with the sugar levels when you are out and about.

You need to use the diabetes supply so you are able to check your sugar levels before and after meals plus when you get up in the morning and before bed like you should. If you do not properly check you blood sugar levels you are just putting your self in a bigger risk for more problems in the near future. You need to make sure that you have the right diabetes supply for the machines that you are going to be using to check your levels. If you do not have the correct kind of supplies you will not be able to receive accurate readings every time that you go to check your sugar levels. If you are not receiving accurate number for your sugar levels then when it is time for your review you may end up getting the wrong medication for the inaccurate levels you were getting.

You will always want to make sure that you are going to even have enough of your diabetes supply for if you are going on a vacation. You will not want to run out in the middle of your vacation and go without being able to check your sugar levels. If you know that you are going on a trip for a long time then you may have to ask your pharmacist if you are able to get enough of the diabetes supply that will be needed for your long trip. That way there, you will not end up with complications on your trip. You know that no one wants you to end up in the hospital because of complications with your diabetes.

If you are battling diabetes or know a loved one who is suffering from the same condition, the most powerful tool you have in your fight for good health and a long healthy lifestyle is your attitude.

Once the reality of diabetes has set in, you can either live with this disease and suffer for the rest of your life or you can cope with diabetes and maintain high energy levels and strong health. It's your choice and it is how you approach your attitude and perception of the situation which makes all the difference in the world.

A positive mental attitude

If you choose to look at your diabetes as a challenge that life has given you, and an opportunity to grow by doing something useful with your disease, you will undoubtedly have no problems maintaining your health and living a happy life. This is not just about tricking your mind into feeling better, research has shown that having a cheerful positive attitude can also program the body to produce chemicals that will help in fighting your disease.

A negative mental attitude

On the other hand, many people just can't seem to accept the fact that they have diabetes and must learn to move on with their lives and perceive their disease as an opportunity for change and positive growth.

These people see no light at the end of the tunnel and are more prone to continuing the bad habits that got them diagnosed with diabetes in the first place. A negative mental attitude will lead to failure in attempts at proper eating, failure with exercise, and failure at keeping up with medications. Ask yourself this question: why make your life any harder than it has to be? Learn to change your thoughts from negative to positive.

Turn diabetes into an opportunity

Some of you may be thinking "How in the world do I look at diabetes is a positive challenge?" Everybody is different and there are various reasons why we have these types of challenges that come into our lives. What you have to do is figure out the connection between the "challenge" of diabetes and how you can grow from it. For example, what changes are you forced to make that are positive as a result of being diagnosed with diabetes, such as eating clean and exercising on a regular basis? Are you now more excited about helping others lead a healthy lifestyle so that they do not have to go through the same experience you are having with diabetes?

These are the gifts that unfortunate events can bring out of a person's life if you choose to see it that way. There is never a such thing as an accident and if you or your loved one has been diagnosed with diabetes then look for the opportunities that you have been granted instead of the negative perceptions of diabetes.

Some of the most popular methods to help with the prevention of type 1 diabetes utilizes drugs that attempt to block the autoimmune disease from demolishing the beta cells of your pancreas. Below is a list of drugs used to aid in this prevention:

1. The Use Of Insulin: There have been promising studies where patients who have islet cell antibodies were given tiny amounts of insulin. This was done in an effort to prolong the time between the anti-bodies and the symptoms.

2. The Use Of Nicotinamide: There has been animal studies done which show that Nicotinamide works to protect the beta cells of small animals, such as mice, that are prone to diabetes. Nicotinamide is a B Vitamin.

3. The Use Of Steroids: Although this approach is not guaranteed to be 100% successful, steroids have been used on test patients and have been proven in some cases to block autoimmune conditions. One such steroid is called prednisone.

Steroids are given to a patient with type 1 diabetes if a doctor finds islet cell antibodies. These steroids seem to reduce the number of islet cell antibodies as well as prolong the time between the development of these antibodies and the beginning of symptoms.

It is important to know that using steroid drugs on patients that have type 1 diabetes is not always the safest choice. Steroids produce side effects, especially if the patient is a small child. When children take steroids they can suffer from numerous side effects such as infections and growth problems.

4. The Use Of Cytotoxic Drugs: Steroids are not the only drugs that have been shown to prolong the time between the development of anti-bodies and symptoms. There exists drugs which are called cytotoxic drugs. These drugs are currently being tested and take action against cells that cause the destruction of pancreatic beta cells.

Cytotoxic drugs are still not reported to be 100% accurate, just like steroids. And side effects have been seen in the use and testing of these drugs, and many patients did experience severe problems from those side effects.

Are you a diabetic trying to decide which blood glucose meter to buy? If you have already started researching meters that are on the market then you already know that it can be confusing as to which one you should use.

If you're concerned about the cost associated with purchasing a new meter, the good news is that most manufacturers are practically giving them away for free. However, there is a catch to that free offer. If you are using their particular machine then you are forced into purchasing their testing strips because each manufacturer creates a different strip to match a specific blood glucose meter. But this is simply the cost of being able to effectively monitor your blood glucose.

What You Should Consider

Whether or not you have to buy testing strips and/or new glucose monitoring machines every year should not really be a concern. As we stated above, it is just the cost of handling your diabetes. But there are other factors that you may want to consider when purchasing your blood glucose meter.

For example, you may want to get a meter that your doctor has a preference for because he or she probably has the technology to download results from a specific meter onto a computer. This will display the results in a specific manner that the doctor prefers. The resulting analysis can tell your doctor whether or not he needs to change your treatments. So basically, you may want to consider looking into a meter that is "doctor-friendly".

Consider also the amount of memory that a blood glucose meter has. Whenever a test is done, the meter should be recording the exact time and date of the tests. In addition to this information, the glucose results will also be recorded. The suggested memory ability and a blood glucose meter should be able to record a minimum of 100 glucose tests. However, this is just a suggestion and there is no hard rule on the amount of memory a machine needs.

Last but not least, the meter that you decide to purchase should have the ability to have the test results and other information downloadable into a computer program or another similar management system. As mentioned previously, it is best to have a meter that is 100% compatible with your doctor's computer systems.

Technology is a wonderful thing and when it comes to being a diabetic, researchers are helping you increase the convenience of having to take your insulin by developing ways for this insulin to be delivered into your bloodstream without the use of needles.

There are several products in development that will allow you to deliver your insulin via inhaling it, through pills, as well as a delivery method we are going to discuss today – the implantable insulin pump.

Researchers are currently working on a system that can deliver your insulin without the use of a needle through an implantable artificial pancreas. The goal here is to eventually produce what is called a "closed loop" system of delivery. The process will work like this:

A) First a glucose sensor, that is designed to measure the level of glucose in your blood, will detect the levels and communicate this data to the pump.

B) The information that the sensor picks up is transmitted directly to the implanted insulin pump and contains all of the glucose data that it read.

C) This pump will then release the perfect amount of insulin that will fulfill the needs depending upon what data was sent from the glucose sensor. The insulin will be delivered via a tube that is located in the peritoneal cavity.

D) In order to keep the implantable insulin pump stocked with insulin, there will be an outside injection point where you will be able to fill up the insulin when needed.

As we mentioned earlier, developers are hoping to come up with a closed loop system. This means that we currently have an "open loop" system. This open loop system provides an external insulin pump which delivers the insulin, but it is your responsibility to program the amount of the dosage in which you want delivered.

This product is not yet available but at the rate the research and development is going, a closed loop implantable insulin pump system should be ready for the market in the upcoming years.

If you suddenly discover that you have diabetes and must take insulin shots of your life, does that mean you're doomed to a rapidly declining form of health that will quickly lead to death? Are you now unable to do the things that normal people do, like play sports, eat at restaurants, or build a physically fit body? If you believe these things, then you should know that they are all myths.

Yes, you must undergo a total lifestyle change and you will never go a day without having to prepare your insulin injections and watch what you eat very closely, but thousands of men and women live a successful and healthy lifestyle even though they go through daily injection shots of insulin in order to treat their diabetes.

What it means to depend on insulin

Having to inject insulin may bring on thoughts of ill health and death because you are not yet educated on exactly what is happening with your body. To put it in simple terms, your pancreas has simply stopped working and it is not producing enough insulin to help control your blood glucose. If you look at the situation in those mechanical terms, which is reality, you are merely using insulin as a tool to keep your body running like normal.

Your life can change for the better

In the beginning of this article you are asked about your thoughts on taking insulin shots and if it produces negative emotions and thoughts about life. The good news is that you can do and be anything you want to even if you have to take insulin. Diabetics can work out every day, eat various delicious foods, and spend time with their family and friends at social settings and meals.

Yes there are some downsides, especially if you have plans on signing up with the military or joining the FBI (both organizations deny anyone with diabetes) but more than likely you are reading this and discovering that your lifestyle is really not going to change much besides maintaining better health and keeping up with your injections.

You make the choice

As a diabetic, you have two choices when it comes to living a longer happier life. The first choice is to assume the negative thoughts of disease and death and do what little is required to get by. The second, and the one that will keep you strong, is to understand that you simply have a broken part of the human machine and must tend to it with daily maintenance. And so long as this "machine" is maintained properly, you can feel great, look great, and live long.

One question you may be asking your doctor is if there is a diabetes cure. Well I bet that he is telling you that there is not a cure for diabetes right now. Even though they are working on a cure for diabetes they have not found one as of yet.

Diabetes is one of the diseases that have been around for many years and they are still trying to come up with a cure for it. They may have been able to discover many different medications that will help you live a little easier with diabetes but there are still things that you are going to have to do besides taking the medication. You will need to make sure that you are eating the proper proportion of foods and that you are exercising right. When you are doing the right things for your body then your body will be able to help take care of you better.

You may be thinking that they are never going to come up with a cure for diabetes but they are doing the best that they can. With more and more people being diagnosed with having diabetes every year they are even working harder to come up with a cure for it. There are many different people out there that have seen what being a diabetic will do to a person that are out trying to help raise money so that the scientist are going to be able to work longer at finding a cure for diabetes.

Don't you think that everyone should try to help out a little in coming up with diabetes cure so that their children would not have to suffer like some has in the past. All that it would take is to join in the effort to raise the money needed for coming up with a diabetes cure and making sure that more people are aware of how diabetes may effect their life. Why not give a little hand in coming up with a diabetes cure so that you would not have to see more and more people suffering with diabetes.

Diabetes is a very critical disease, and people who are suffering from diabetes are also vulnerable of acquiring several serious complications. These complications can prove to be life-threatening unless they are monitored with all of necessary treatments needed.

Peripheral vascular disease (PVD)

One such condition that stems from having diabetes is called peripheral vascular disease (PVD). PVD is the clogging of the arteries outside of the heart and brain, resulting in the loss of pulse in the feet. About one third of people who are suffering from diabetes for 10 years won't feel a pulse in their feet. The condition could then run up their legs and ultimately lead to amputation of the limbs. This is very serious and may lead to death.

PVD is one of the leading causes of disabilities among people with diabetes, as well as for people who are in their 50s and older. However, this disease usually targets people with diabetes much earlier in life and progresses much quicker than non-diabetics.

Signs and symptoms of peripheral vascular disease

You may be suffering from PVD if you experience sporadic pain in your buttocks, your thighs, or your calves after after walking for an extended period of time. This pain typically subsides when the walking is stopped for a short rest. People suffering from PVD, especially diabetics, reduces their life expectancy because of the damage and weakening of their arteries.

Besides being a diabetic, there are other risk factors involved in your chances of acquiring PVD. The two factors that cannot be avoided are:

1) Your age – because your chances of developing PVD increases as you get older.

2) Genetic factors – because PVD is inherited in some families and is very common with African-Americans.

Is there a relationship between stress and diabetes? Does stress affect a person with diabetes in a negative way that might contribute to further complications or symptoms?

Researchers have not yet determined if there is an exact connection between stress and the development of complications that arise from diabetes. However, with a little research and some common sense, it is pretty sensible to assume that the less stress that a person has then the healthier that person will be. And this is especially true if you have diabetes.

The good news is that you do not have to wait for scientists to tell you that answer. You can use your own self as a testing ground to determine how stress affects your diabetes. This is probably more important than any other group study that can be had because every individual has different ways of handling stress.

You can start by taking note of stressful situations or any distressing news that you experience. Write down your results and how you relate to these situations. Ask yourself the following questions in order to help determine just how stress is affecting your diabetes:

1. Is there any affect on your blood sugar levels after experiencing a stressful situation? If there is an affect, make note whether your blood sugar levels increased or decreased.

2. Did you notice any difference between shorter, more intense stressful situations, as opposed to longer, more drawn out stressful experiences? Did you experience a negative situation that lasted for days or even weeks? If so, then what difference did it make in your overall energy as well as your blood glucose levels?

3. If you undergo a moment of anger or being upset at somebody, test your blood glucose levels. It's important to also record your blood glucose levels once you have the experience of letting that anger go. Did your levels go back to normal or did they increase? In other words, by resolving a stressful situation with another person, did this cause any improvement in your levels?

4. Does your progress and treatment become sidetracked as a result of the way you try to cope with stress? In other words, do you resort to self gratification in order to make yourself feel better, such as drinking, smoking, or eating too much? And if so, than how did this behavior sidetrack your treatments, if at all?

Are you a diabetic that is taking multiple types of drugs at the same time? Recent studies have shown that diabetics on average take up to six types of different medications at once and this does not include their diabetic medications. Unfortunately, when these drugs are mixed together many people have extremely bad reactions to them and are often hospitalized.

I'm sure you would like to think that your doctor should be an expert and recognize whether or not it is safe to mix certain drugs, but unfortunately not every doctor knows what may happen and it is your responsibility to research the drugs you are taking and to ensure that it is healthy to combine them.

As crazy as it may sound, a large number of common medications that diabetics use, especially high blood pressure medications, can sometimes cause a diabetic condition that would not have existed had the drugs not been taken in the first place.

Below is a list of common drugs and the risks they may have if you are a diabetic:

1. Beta Blockers: Beta-blockers, such as Lopressor, Tenormin, and Inderal, have been known to reduce the release of insulin.

2. Minoxidil: Minoxidil has a tendency to raise blood glucose levels.

3. Thiazide Diuretics: Thiazide diuretics include such drugs as hydroDiuril, Diuril, Zaroxolyn, and Oretic, and is known to raise glucose levels due to its effect it has on causing the loss of potassium.

4. Calcium channel blockers: Calcium channel blockers include such drugs as Calan, Isoptin, Adalat, Procardia, and Norvasc, and is known to reduce the secretion of insulin.

5. Oral contraceptives: Although current oral contraceptives seem to be safe, the older versions were known to have caused hypoglycemia when estrogen doses were taken at higher than normal doses.

6. Corticosteroids: Even though corticosteroids can be used as a topical solution, it has a tendency to raise blood glucose levels.

7. Niacin: Niacin, which is a very common B vitamin and is suggested to lower cholesterol, it has been known to result in a hyperglycemic tendency within a person that has diabetes.

8. Thyroid hormone: When levels are elevated, blood glucose levels or raised because of the reduction of insulin coming from the pancreas.

9. Diphenylhydantoin: The common name for this drug is called Dilantin which is recommended to people to help control seizures. However, it also blocks the release of insulin.

You have to be extremely careful about marketing tactics used by supplement companies and other over-the-counter drug products which make claims about curing diabetes or the conditions connected with this disease.

So many drugs have been claimed as a cure during the past 10 years or so it is amazing people still fall for the hype. Some of these drugs and supplements may have helped a few people, which is the basis for their claims, however these cases are few and far between.

To help you with your due diligence when it comes to products out there that make claims of curing diabetes, we have listed 2 popular products below. These are just brief summaries and you should always consult with your doctor before deciding to combine your medications with any over-the-counter drugs or supplements which claim to help with diabetes.

Aspirin

When taken by itself, aspirin has not shown to have any positive effects on treating diabetes. However, the reason why some aspirin companies have made claims in their product's advertising about helping diabetics is because aspirin does have a slight effect in terms of dropping blood glucose, but only if the patient is taking any type of sulfonylurea drugs. Unfortunately, this affect of aspirin when mixed with sulfonylurea drugs is very rare and completely inconsistent.

Chromium

Magazines, newspapers, and online press releases have all provided articles that give nothing but praise for chromium as a supplement which can help control diabetes. These claims were largely based on a study that was made in China with people who have type 2 diabetes. These people were given large doses of chromium which improved their blood glucose, hemoglobin A1C, and cholesterol, all while reducing how much insulin they needed to take.

Sounds promising, doesn't it?

The study would definitely be exciting news except for the fact that these people were already deficient in chromium in the first place. When the same type of experiments are done with people who live in the United States and other countries where chromium is abundant in the foods they eat, patients do not show the same type of improvement in their blood glucose when supplemented with chromium.

So as you can see, these findings are a bit skewed in the larger picture of things. There is no current evidence that shows that using chromium can help people with diabetes. Should you choose to take chromium for the possibility that it will improve your diabetes, be sure to consult your doctor first as well as a dietitian to avoid overdosing on too much chromium, which can become toxic in your body.

We hear so often that diabetes can be the end result of obesity, but what exactly is behind this process? What mechanism is at play which creates diabetes in people that are extremely overweight?

The answers to these questions can be a bit complicated because of each individual's background, but essentially what is happening is that when a person becomes more and more overweight, they become resistant to their own insulin. When an obese person starts to lose weight and get healthy again, their bodies will start to slowly regain its insulin sensitivity.

Scientists and researchers have believed for a long time now that there must be a substance which is produced by fat that may be helpful in explaining the connection between obesity and diabetes. In fact, they have recently discovered a certain compound that exists in the fat tissues of mice which might be the answer they are looking for.

A compound known as resistin

The compound known as resistin was first noted in the journal entitled "Nature" (January issue of 2001) when it was isolated in small rodents. Resistin is a hormone which is created by fat cells and causes the body to become resistant to its own insulin. Scientists then discovered that resistin could be suppressed by a drug known as "rosiglitazone" which is designed to improve insulin resistance.

Another good sign of progress in the attempt to control insulin in obese people is the fact that when resistin was injected into mice, it caused the mice to become resistant to their insulin. However, anti-bodies that were opposed to resistin were given to these same mice which then showed a decrease in the resistance to insulin.

This is not an official finding as of yet

Although the above research looks very promising, the connection is not yet 100% founded on concrete evidence with humans because resistin has not yet been detected in human fat cells. However, Researchers are confident that they will find a similar compound to that of resistin within the human body stemming from fat cells, but it is not yet verified in any recent publications.

For the diabetic that must administer insulin shots for the rest of your life, there are some basic tidbits of information that you should know about in order to be better educated about medication. Proper care and storage of your diabetes supplies is essential so that you are always keeping the medication up-to-date and fresh.

Here are a few common informative tips that pertain to all types of insulin:

1. Always pay attention to how long you store your insulin at room temperature. Write down the exact date for each bottle and then adhere to the "4-week rule". This means that insulin should be discarded if it has been exposed to room temperatures for 4 weeks straight.

2. Always discard insulin if it has has reached the expiration date, even if stored in the refrigerator. Unlike storing your medication at room temperature, refrigeration does keep insulin fresh for a longer period time, but once the expiration mark has been hit, you should discard it immediately.

3. Keep your insulin fresh by protecting it against certain conditions that may cause the medication to be exposed to heat or frozen temperatures. Direct sunlight or even excessive cold temperatures can damage the insulin. Proper storage is essential.

4. Some diabetics will take less than 50 units of insulin in one shot. If you are taking the same amount then you can purchase cc syringes that will make it easier for you to measure up to your 50 units. On the other hand, if you are taking less than 30 units, you can find 3/10 cc syringes for easy application.

5. All insulin shots can be given through clothing if need be. Doing so is completely safe and will not affect the delivery of the medication into your bloodstream.

6. If you must use your disposable syringes more than once, this is completely safe. However, it is not recommended that you reuse your syringes more than two or three times before replacing them with a new one.

7. All insulin can be given through shorter needles if the longer ones are too painful. However, the depth of the needle does affect how fast the insulin can start working depending on what part of the body the injection was given.

One of the saddest things a new mother could possibly experience is finding out that her infant has been diagnosed with diabetes. However, once the diagnosis has been made it is now your responsibility to ensure that your baby is getting the care and treatment that he or she needs. The information in this article will give you a starting point as to what to expect and what responsibilities you'll have to adhere to in order to take care of your diabetic infant.

Unfortunately, many mothers do not realize that their babies are diabetic and they may chalk up the symptoms to typical infant problems. There is no way for your baby to express to you the pain they are experiencing or what symptoms they are suffering from. It is your job to take a closer look. For example, diabetic babies will urinate excessively in their diapers. They will also lose a lot of weight. These symptoms may also be accompanied by diarrhea and vomiting.

If you see that your baby is experiencing any of the above conditions, then it is necessary for you to take him to the doctor immediately. Once diagnosis has been made and your baby has been labeled as a diabetic, this is when the work begins.

Important: Do not blame yourself!

It is very hard for new parents to pick up on the signs of diabetes when their babies are becoming sick. What is important is that you have chosen to work hard and to ensure that your child will grow up to be as healthy and vibrant as possible.

Once your baby has been diagnosed, you will have to be trained on giving him insulin injections. You'll also have to learn how to test his blood glucose levels. Diet and nutrition will play a huge role in taking care of your diabetic infant. You must now pay strict attention to what foods you put into his system. It is important for the right foods to be eaten in order for his blood glucose to stay low.

And equally important is getting your baby conditioned to doing the right things with diet and nutrition so that as he becomes older he will continue to take care of himself with proper diabetic treatments. This can be one of the most significant learning periods for young diabetics.

Because diabetes is such a powerful and dangerous illness, there are many symptoms that stem from this terrible disease. One such example is nerve disease, which is the result of having high blood glucose levels for 10 years or more. Once nerve disease is rooted from diabetes, this is called diabetic neuropathy.

In order to diagnose a nerve disorder, a person's nerve conduction velocity (NCV for short) is severely slowed down. Nerve conduction velocity is simply the speed at which nervous impulses travel down a nerve fiber. Unfortunately a person may not show any symptoms for a long time to come even though their body is experiencing slow NCV. Therefore, getting tested to find out the speed of their NCV is a way to diagnose neuropathy in diabetics who are not yet showing symptoms of nerve damage. Medications can then be supplied to the patient and in many cases their nerve symptoms will improve.

WARNING: Diabetic neuropathy is most prevalent in men and women over the age of 40. And this illness tends to hit people that are taller than average. This is probably due to the fact that they have longer nerve fibers which gets damaged more easily. And if you drink, then you must know that even a small quantity of any type of alcohol can make your neuropathy worsen.

How A Doctor Can Test The Functions Of Your Nerves

There are various ways your doctor can test the function of your nerves in order to determine whether or not you have diabetic neuropathy. Because there are different nerve fibers that seem to be responsible for different kinds of sensations throughout the body, doctors can test the connections between those sensations (touch, temperature, vibration, and light) and your nerves to create an analysis.

1. Testing Using Vibration: Vibration testing is a rather simple test that can be initiated by a tuning fork. Using vibration testing is what doctors prefer to utilize in order to bring out any abnormalities of the body's larger nerve fibers.

2. Testing Using Temperature: Temperature testing is very important because it can determine the status of the body's smaller nerve fibers. Knowing the status of the small fibers is extremely important because if the small fibers are damaged, then it is possible for you to lose your ability to feel the sensations of extremely hot temperatures such as boiling water.

3. Testing Using Light Touch: By testing a patient using light touch methods, doctors can determine which large fibers are damaged, if any. Larger fibers within the body pick up and sense anything that touches the skin, sending signals to our brain that we are experiencing a sensation. A person in good health and without nerve damage can feel a filament tool that is tested with 1 gram of force to bend.

If you suffer from type 2 diabetes, then overcoming poor diet habits should be at the top of your list when it comes to maintaining good health and taking preventive measures against further complications. Since the majority of men and women who have type 2 diabetes are overweight, it should go without saying that weight control and weight loss should be taken into serious consideration.

How fast can losing weight benefit a type 2 diabetic?

Even if a person only loses a small amount of weight as a diabetic, the benefits of this weight loss can be dramatic. The results are seen almost immediately. For example, your blood glucose levels will fall at a rapid pace. Blood pressure begins to decline and can stay at a healthier level if this weight loss is maintained. And your triglycerides drop practically overnight, while HDL (good cholesterol) rises.

If the above benefits aren't enough to get you to start paying more attention to your body fat levels, then consider the fact that even a reduction of as little as 10% of your body weight is enough to have a significant effect on fighting coronary artery disease.

As a type 2 diabetic, pay attention to the fats that you ingest

You must also be very careful about the fat content of your diet. Type 2 diabetics are unfortunately prone to experience metabolic syndrome. This unpleasant condition of diabetes can be prevented if you pay better attention to the foods that may cause an increase in triglycerides. When your triglyceride levels rise than this can lead to the production of tiny dense LDL particles which are connected with coronary artery disease.

Always watch your salt intake

Keeping the amount of salt limited in a diet should pertain to everybody, not just those people who suffer from type 2 diabetes. However, men and women that have diabetes have to be extra careful because too much salt can cause hypertension and hypertension is a leading factor to the onset of early complications that stem from diabetes. Remember, regardless of whether you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes, your lifelong goal and duty is to take care of your body so that you can stay healthy and not suffer from any further illnesses that your condition may cause.

Approved by the Federal Drug Administration in 1995, Metformin has been used successfully to treat men and women suffering from diabetes. This glucose-lowering medication can be found under the brand name "Glucophage". However, if you were to seek this medicine outside of the United States, you will find it under the following various brand names: Fornidd, Diaformin, Benoformin, Metomin, Dextin, Glucoform, Metforal, and Orabet.

Interestingly enough, Metformin had a sister drug which caused some patients to have fatal complications and was banned from the United States over 20 years ago. This sister drug was called phenformin.

Fortunately however, Metformin has been used for years now without much trouble at all and to date is not officially associated with any of the fatal complications caused by phenformin. You can find these reports in the Internal Medicine Archives of 2003, filed in the month of November.

For more information on Metformin and its characteristics, please read below:

1. This drug works well for people that have either type 1 diabetes or type 2 diabetes. The reason for this is because it does not rely on stimulating insulin in order to work.

2. Metformin causes a reduction of blood glucose by limiting how much glucose is produced in the liver.

3. It does not cause hypoglycemia so long as the drug is taken by itself.

4. Metformin comes tablets with strengths of 500, 850, and 1000 mg.

5. Patients should not take more than 2500 mg daily which should be broken up to be ingested with each meal.

6. You must take this drug with food or else it may cause gastrointestinal irritation. However, this is a side effect that will diminish in time.

7. Doctors do not recommend that this drug be taken if you are suffering from liver disease, kidney disease, or heart disease.

8. Many patients experience weight loss when Metformin is taken. This is usually a matter of a lack of appetite, caused by gastrointestinal irritation.

9. This drug is not recommended for pregnant women, mothers who are nursing, and people who drink alcohol on a regular basis.

If are pregnant and have diabetes then you will need to completely stop taking any prescription drugs that may be harmful to the fetus. Also, in order to establish some sort of a baseline to prevent future damage, you must have your kidneys and eyes checked. You must stop all smoking and alcohol drinking.

Being pregnant means that a diabetic woman will need to adhere to a stricter regimen of glucose control during the pregnancy as compared to the treatment she was adhering to before pregnancy. Your blood glucose levels are going to be lower than normal because the fetus is extracting glucose from you and at enormous speeds. On top of that, your body will look towards fat for fuel much sooner than it normally would which ends up producing ketones sooner. Having too many ketones is also dangerous to the fetus.

Keeping A Close Eye On Your Diet

As a diabetic, you probably have researched plenty of information on what it takes to eat healthy and in accordance with preventative measures against long-term complications. However, now that you are pregnant you need to know about the following special requirements:

1. The amount of protein that you should be consuming is approximately 2 grams per kilogram as per your ideal body weight. This means that if your ideal body weight score is 50, then you should be eating approximately 100 g of protein every day.

2. The amount of carbohydrates that you should be eating everyday should be approximately 50% of your entire daily kilocalories. In other words, half of everything that you eat each day should be in the form of carbohydrates, preferably complex carbohydrates.

3. The amount of fat that you should be consuming should be 30% of your total daily kilocalories or less. You must remember that fat contains 9 kg calories per gram, which is twice as dense as a carbohydrate or protein.

4. You must be sure to eat at least three solid meals each day. Eating more than three meals is acceptable so long as they are in smaller portions. Having a snack before bedtime is also beneficial because it helps slow down the starvation process that your body goes into from the long fasting period between dinner and breakfast.
