When Acid Reflux Surgery is Necessary

Most people have heard of acid reflux. It is also commonly referred to as heartburn. Few people realize the severity of acid reflux. In some cases, acid reflux surgery becomes a necessity. It is important to understand the anatomy and causes of acid reflux in order to understand its severity.

When food is swallowed, it travels down the esophagus and through the lower esophageal sphincter into the stomach. The lower esophageal sphincter is supposed to stay tightly closed when food is not passing through. Certain foods, such as chocolate, caffeine, fried foods, fatty foods, and tomato-based foods can cause the lower esophageal sphincter to weaken. This allows for stomach contents and juices to rise up, causing the burning feeling of acid reflux. In addition, eating too much or lying down too soon after eating can put pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter and cause it to open.

Tonsils Bad Breath

Bad breath, or halitosis, is a fairly common malady. Usually, the cause is some kind of dental problem or the foods we eat. Plaque, food particles, and stale saliva provide excellent breeding ground for bacteria in our mouths to thrive and proliferate, releasing odorous substances known as volatile sulfur compounds.

Experts say that 85 to 90% of bad breath cases emanate from the mouth and only a very few could actually trace the odor back to someplace other than the mouth. These areas often include the gastrointestinal tract, the back of the throat, the lungs, and, of course, the tonsils.

Shopping For Glucose Meters: What Type Should You Buy?

Are you a diabetic trying to decide which blood glucose meter to buy? If you have already started researching meters that are on the market then you already know that it can be confusing as to which one you should use.

If you're concerned about the cost associated with purchasing a new meter, the good news is that most manufacturers are practically giving them away for free. However, there is a catch to that free offer. If you are using their particular machine then you are forced into purchasing their testing strips because each manufacturer creates a different strip to match a specific blood glucose meter. But this is simply the cost of being able to effectively monitor your blood glucose.

Alzheimer Prevention

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive degenerative illness that results in the destruction of a person's cognitive skills and abilities, including thinking, reasoning, learning and retention, communication, and sometimes even motor. While much of the research currently being done on Alzheimer's disease is on finding a cure and treatment for the symptoms, considerable progress has also been made in Alzheimer prevention.

As the president and medical director of the Alzheimer's Prevention Foundation International in Tucson, Arizona, Dharma Singh Khalsa, M.D., is one of the physicians at the forefront of Alzheimer prevention. He contends that the current research on the disease serves only to confirm the idea that Alzheimer prevention is the only practical way of dealing with it.
