Surgical Treatment Options For Hair Loss

Many men and women who experience hair loss choose to have surgical treatments which can prove to be very successful in alleviating the appearance of baldness. Some examples of such operations that can help with people suffering from hair loss are scalp reductions, scalp lifts, and hair transplants that involve micrograft procedures.

When a person chooses to have a scalp reduction done, the surgery involves removing small areas of baldness from the scalp. Scalp lifts, on the other hand, are when very large areas of the hairy sections of a person's scalp is removed and rotated to other areas that are bald. And then there is the micrograft procedure which involves replacing bald patches with hair follicles that are moved from one area of the scalp to another.

Each of these hair loss surgical treatments take time until the results can be fully appreciated. There is no such thing as having just one or two treatments done, and expecting a full head of hair. It typically can take months before enough of the procedures have added up to produce a noticeable and long-lasting "growth of hair" effect on a person's head.

What is the most common surgical procedure done for scalp injuries?

When a person has had an accident and suffers tremendous hair loss due to a scalp injury, scalp reduction is the most common form of surgery that is used. Unlike micrograft treatments, which will help the appearance of a person's balding problem over time, scalp reductions are used because a portion of the scalp needs to be cut out. The edges around the patch of skin that was removed will be pulled and sewn together.

Although this procedure was very common for people with hair loss in the past, those men and women who have not suffered from a scalp injury and are looking to add hair follicles to balding areas will always opt for micrograft treatments.
